What is Spelling to Communicate?
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a communication method that teaches individuals to communicate through spelling. It consists of a stencil board with letters. The student uses this letterboard to reliably spell out words, phrases, and sentences. Eventually, they are able to communicate their thoughts fully, expressing their ideas, opinions, dreams, etc. S2C is for anyone who is unable to carry on a full conversation like their neurotypical peers. People with Down syndrome, autism, apraxia, sensory processing disorder, Cerebral Palsy, and other special needs have found success in communicating with S2C.
S2C is a technique that focuses on coaching motor skills (using the elbow and shoulder) to point to letters on a letterboard, spelling out words, phrases and sentences. Individuals become more fluent and build new motor pathways between the brain and body. As a result, purposeful motor skills improve, and individuals eventually move from pointing to letters to typing on the keyboard.
The goal is to achieve synchrony between cognition and motor. Teaching and motor practice centers around engaging cognitive lessons. Communication moves from concrete to abstract as motor skills progress. Integration of cognitive and motor skills leads to improved physical and emotional regulation. Communication and motor control lead to improved access, quality of life and opportunities to be contributing members of society.
